Kohima: The Kohima Law College, in collaboration with the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO), celebrated World Consumer Rights Day with the theme “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.”
More than 150 law students attended the event, adorned in traditional attire to symbolise their dedication to upholding consumer rights and seeking protection from unfair practices and exploitation by unscrupulous traders.

NVCO President and Assistant Professor Kezhokhoto Savi highlighted the significance of the 2024 theme, stressing the importance of ethically developing and using AI systems.
He emphasised the need for consumer protection mechanisms to adapt to technological advancements, citing the pivotal role of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, in enhancing consumer rights.
Savi outlined the key provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, including the establishment of the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) and measures to address issues like product liability and misleading advertisements.

He shared the importance of consumer education and awareness, enumerating the basic rights of consumers, including protection from hazardous goods, access to information, freedom of choice, participation in decision-making processes, avenues for redressal, and consumer education.
The event featured a skit performed by final year LLB students, illustrating a scenario where consumers sought redressal for purchasing expired goods. Presentations on food safety and security were delivered by students Wangshimeren Pongen and Vikeduo Kire, based on relevant legislation.
