Last Sunday (May 12, 2024) the people of the world celebrated World Social Communication Day. The commemoration of this social communication day was initiated by the Catholic Church in 1963.

The theme of this year’s World Social Communication Day is “Artificial Intelligence and Heartfelt Wisdom: Towards Communication that is Truly Human,” which also reflects how leaders of the community are keeping up with the times. The field of communication in the world today is determined by the development of information technology, including artificial intelligence (AI).

Although in reality, since the invention of computers and the internet, humans have been dealing with the most basic forms of artificial intelligence, such as when we (humans) face computers in playing chess or other games. However, along with technological advancements and changes in the lifestyle of society on Earth, artificial intelligence has also grown, almost being able to replace some human creations.

Artificial intelligence provides many benefits and solutions to some people. However, for others, the AI technology that has been pioneered since 1950, when British mathematician Alan Turing introduced the Turing Test in the Journal of Computing Machinery and Intelligence, has become a threat. With the use of AI applications, someone who cannot play any musical instruments can create a song. A literary work can also be born from artificial intelligence, and visual art can be “shuffled” as desired.

There are many students who use artificial intelligence to complete their university assignments, which creates a dilemma for lecturers. There are issues regarding the intellectual property rights of the works produced using artificial intelligence. There are also social and psychological issues, as reported by today’s newspaper when a person shows their virtual girlfriend in Wantalk, an artificial intelligence chatbot created by Chinese technology company, Baidu. In his message welcoming the Social Communication Day 2024, Pope Francis emphasized, “Just like other human intelligence and skills, algorithms are not neutral. Therefore, preventive actions are necessary, namely by creating guidelines for actions (code of ethics). This code of ethics is useful in preventing the negative impact of using artificial intelligence systems, which could potentially cause social injustice and discrimination.” Let artificial intelligence be beneficial.

To make sure that artificial intelligence is truly valuable to life, the Catholic Church, together with the United Nations (UN), technology companies, and several figures, formulated the Rome Call for AI Ethics in 2020. The teachings of philosopher Romano Guardini in his book “the Lord” (1949) and “the End of the Modern World” (1957) serve as a foundation, stating that ethics and morality are controls for the public in responding to the development of information technology, especially artificial intelligence.
