EIT Oxford’s Dr. Laura Gilbert on AI Accountability and Responsible AI Adoption

Artificial intelligence’s advancement is reshaping industries by offering transformative opportunities, but on the other hand, it is raising ethical and regulatory concerns. Organizations – both public and private – are navigating the complexities of AI adoption, ensuring that language models are not only powerful but also transparent, secure and aligned with human oversight.

Dr. Laura Gilbert, head of AI for government, Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford and Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, and AI expert advisor for the British government, warns that the focus should not solely be on generative AI models but on building reliable, human-centric AI systems.
“AI is not just about generative models. The real challenge is engineering AI systems that support human decision-making rather than replace it,” Dr. Gilbert said.
With the rise of AI regulations, both governments and businesses are rushing to assess risks. The U.K. government established the AI Safety Institute to evaluate AI threats, but Dr. Gilbert raised a crucial question: “We spent months assessing AI risks, but at some point, we had to ask – what about the risk of doing nothing? What if we don’t invest in AI adoption at all?”
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Dr. Gilbert also discussed:
- How to effectively communicate AI strategies to leadership teams;
- AI’s role in shaping business and government decision-making;
- The rise of interdisciplinary AI strategies across industries.
Gilbert is an AI and data science expert who created and directed the Incubator for Artificial Intelligence at 10 Downing Street, where she was also the founding director of 10DS – the data science and analytics team. Before transitioning to government roles, Gilbert served as chief information technologist of Rescon, where she led research and development.
