Adobe Photoshop Unlocks a New Era of Generative Creativity With Firefly

By Ashley Still, Adobe

Humans are uniquely creative — intrinsically driven to express ideas, convey emotion and inspire action through words, music, and visual media. Creativity has evolved hand-in-hand with technological innovation, from simplistic drawing to painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and video – continuously expanding and popularizing creative expression for work and play.

Generative AI is quickly emerging as the most significant, new creative medium of our era. Like the invention of photography, generative AI will transform professional creativity and democratize creation for anyone who can describe what’s in their mind’s eye.

Today, we are introducing a new era of creative expression by bringing generative AI into Adobe Photoshop to reimagine creative workflows. Generative Fill combines Adobe Firefly, a family of creative generative AI models, with the non-destructive editing power of Photoshop to expand the creative canvas for millions of customers.

Redefining state-of-the-art creativity

Generative Fill is natively integrated into Photoshop, delivering unlimited freedom to explore while maintaining full control over the creative process. Creatives can add, extend or remove content from their images using simple text prompts to achieve realistic results in seconds. Photoshop goes beyond text-to-image by automatically matching the perspective, lighting, and style of an image to deliver results that are truly magical.

Generative Fill works at any scale — from filling a blank canvas with blue skies and rolling hills to adding a tiny stray cat to a multi-layered cityscape — giving every new element its own layer. That means generated content can be non-destructively edited using the full power and precision of Photoshop. Whether a creative pro wants to move content two pixels over or change the color or lighting, they can modify at whatever scale they choose.

Generative Fill in Photoshop also expands creative confidence — making creating accessible for people of all backgrounds, allowing them to create as simply as they type, confidently play with off-the-wall ideas, ideate around different concepts, and produce dozens of variations quickly. High-quality results, which previously took hours to create, can now happen in a matter of seconds.

Transparent AI through content credentials

Like all Adobe AI innovations, Firefly was developed according to our AI Ethics principles of transparency, responsibility, and accountability. In introducing Firefly, Adobe extended our work with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), a movement of more than 1000 members worldwide that we started to create a global standard for trusted digital content attribution. All content generated with Firefly, including with Generative Fill, will include Content Credentials — a “nutrition label” for content providing transparency on when generative AI is used to create or alter images.

Built on Firefly — high quality and safe for commercial use

Since introducing the beta of Firefly on Firefly.adobe.com, it has quickly become one of the most popular beta releases in Adobe’s 40-year history, generating over 70 million images in its first month.

Firefly is the most differentiated generative AI offering in the market, trained on hundreds of millions of professional-grade, licensed images in Adobe Stock, along with openly licensed content. This means everything created with Firefly and Generative Fill in Photoshop is commercially viable, professional quality content.

A community collaboration

We are building the next generation of AI-powered Adobe Photoshop in partnership with the creative community. We are first introducing Generative Fill in the beta version of Photoshop to co-create with our community, and the early feedback has been phenomenal.

Andrew Hochradel, owner of HOC.CO describes Generative Fill in Photoshop “as a workflow revolution that equips me to stay in the creative flow. I don’t have to worry about the technicalities of precision masking or a stray pixel hanging over my composite anymore. Generative Fill helps me visualize, experiment, and iterate faster than ever before.”

We’re excited to welcome more creatives — professionals and those with creative aspirations — to learn more and join the conversation.
