FlowGPT Inc., a startup with a consumer-focused platform for sharing artificial intelligence apps, today announced that it has raised $10 million in funding.
Goodwater Capital led the investment, which is described as a pre-Series A round. Existing FlowGPT backer DCM participated as well.
Consumers can use prompts not only to perform individual tasks with a generative AI model, but also to customize the manner in which it will process future queries. For example, a user could configure a large language model to generate document summaries in a specific style. It’s also possible to customize other parameters such as the length of responses, the language in which they’re generated and the information sources the LLM should draw upon when creating responses.
FlowGPT refers to AI models customized in this manner as AI apps. Last January, the company launched a platform that enables consumers to customize generative AI models through a no-code interface and share the results. FlowGPT disclosed today on occasion of its funding round that its users have created more than 100,000 AI apps over the past 13 months.
The company’s platform supports AI models from multiple providers. Users can create apps based on Google LLC’s Gemini, the Claude large language model from Anthropic PBC and OpenAI’s DALL-E image generator.
FlowGPT also provides access to multiple open-source algorithms. Its catalog includes Meta Platforms Inc.’s Llama 2, one of the most advanced LLMs in the open-source ecosystem. The model is available in multiple editions that are geared towards use cases such as generating code and powering chatbot applications.
FlowGPT provides a search bar and category filters for browsing the AI apps hosted on its platform. Users can save conversations with an app in the form of a sharable link, as well as send donations to the app’s developer. A review mechanism makes it possible to share feedback in the form of a thumbs-up or thumbs-down.
“We believe the biggest future for AI is in open ecosystems,” said Goodwater Capital partner Coddy Johnson. “FlowGPT is helping to lead the way by building the largest open platform for AI apps.”
According to TechCrunch, the startup is currently struggling to moderate the apps on its platform effectively. It told the publication that it’s “proactively engaging with leading experts in the field of AI ethics” to address AI risks.
FlowGPT will use the capital to hire more engineers with expertise in backend, interface and mobile development. It also plans to recruit product and operations professionals. The new hires will help support the company’s efforts to expand its user base.
As part of its growth push, FlowGPT is gearing up to launch a new mobile app called Flow that it describes as a “multimedia experience.” The app will provide access to generative AI models that can generate speech, images and videos based on natural language prompts. The company also plans to roll out a revenue-sharing system for consumers who upload AI apps to its platform.
