Can AI be trusted? Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa will moderate a panel with global tech thinkers, including Taiwan’s first digital minister Audrey Tang, during the Social Good Summit on November 16.

MANILA, Philippines – Artificial intelligence has increasingly become embedded in our daily lives. From private corporations, to governments, to the media, AI systems have rapidly reshaped how we view innovation and efficiency.

But the rapid development of AI in recent years, which has been largely unchecked, has also raised serious concerns about accountability, transparency, and the preservation of public values.

So, how can we ensure that AI innovations uphold and protect facts, trust, and human dignity? How can we guard against the erosion of democracy in an increasingly automated world?

Panel discussion on trust and technology

These are the questions we aim to address at the Social Good Summit 2025: Make Your Move, Rappler’s biggest annual gathering of global leaders, journalists, and changemakers. The event is happening on November 16, at Lanson Place MOA, Pasay City.

Watch an exceptional lineup of experts and leaders in the panel session “Trust and Technology: AI Safety, Ethics, and the Future of Civic Resilience.” Co-presented by data forensics firm The Nerve, this panel will engage in a timely discussion on the evolving ethics, governance, and societal impact of AI.

Rappler CEO and Nobel Peace laureate Maria Ressa will moderate the discussion, joined by an esteemed panel of experts from the media, public service, and the tech industry:

  • Carole Cadwalladr – British journalist who gained international prominence for her investigative reportage uncovering the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal. She was a Pulitzer finalist for National Reporting in 2019 with the New York Times, investigating Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, and the misuse of data in the Brexit referendum and the 2016 US presidential election.
  • Audrey Tang – Taiwan’s first minister of digital affairs, who pioneered the use of technology for strengthening democracy in Taiwan by using social digital tools for deliberation, addressing polarization, and surfacing citizens’ sentiments for more inclusive government policy-making. She is now ambassador-at-large for cyber affairs and co-author of “Plurality,” a crowdsourced book that lays out a vision for how technology and democracy can thrive together, amid fears about artificial intelligence and disinformation.
  • Peter D. Maquera – CEO of Microsoft Philippines. Beyond Microsoft, he serves as an independent director and trustee across top business councils and organizations, bringing decades of experience driving innovation and collaboration.

The panel discussion will explore the risks and realities of AI systems, including surveillance and algorithmic bias. The panelists’ diverse perspectives will also contribute to the fruitful discussion of proactive and ethical frameworks that can strengthen institutional and societal resilience against AI misuse.

Experience creating your own AI policy

A key feature in this year’s summit is our interactive breakout sessions that are meant to turn ideas and conversations into action.

The “Creating a people-first AI policy” workshop complements the AI panel discussion by shifting the conversation from awareness to action. Led by The Nerve and moderated by Rappler’s head of digital services and lead researcher on disinformation and platforms Gemma B. Mendoza, the session invites participants to reflect on how AI affects people in their specific roles — whether in business, tech, government, or advocacy — and draft their own guiding principles to ensure AI is used ethically and responsibly.

Using the People-First AI Policy Canvas, participants will individually articulate values-based AI policies that prioritize human rights, transparency, and social impact over pure efficiency. Participants will be grouped prior to the session to highlight common aspirations and challenges around ethical AI use within similar industries. The breakout session will also make use of The Nerve’s Synth, an AI-powered survey tool, to help the participants synthesize shared themes and values among their respective groups.
