Uniphore Technologies Inc. has bought Orby AI Inc. and Autonom8 Inc., two startups that develop software for automating repetitive business tasks.
The company announced the deals today without disclosing the financial terms.
Uniphore was valued at $2.5 billion following its most recent $400 million funding round in 2022. The Palo Alto, California-based company provides a platform that enterprises use to build artificial intelligence applications. It counts HP Inc., Docusign Inc. and other major tech firms as customers.
Several of Uniphore’s features focus on helping companies make data from their internal systems available to AI models. Usually, the task requires moving the data to a new environment in which it can be queried. Uniphore’s platform runs queries on data without moving it, an approach that saves times and requires fewer hardware resources.
Uniphore can automatically turn the information it collects into AI training datasets. It can also make the data accessible to AI models that have already been trained via a RAG, or retrieval-augmented generation, mechanism. A no-code interface allows users to incorporate their algorithms into AI agents.
The first of Uniphore’s two acquisitions, Orby, is aimed at enhancing its platform’s agent development features. The startup has built a tool that makes it possible to automate business tasks using AI agents. According to Orby, its software is particularly adept at tasks that involve interacting with an application’s graphical user interface.
Orby’s agents are not powered by large language models but rather a so-called neuro-symbolic AI model. This is a type of algorithm that combines elements of LLMs with symbolic AI, an early form of machine learning developed decades ago. In some situations, neuro-symbolic models are less prone to hallucinations than standard AI algorithms.
Autonom8, the other startup that Uniphore has acquired, provides a software toolkit called Autonom8. It allows business users to create automation workflows in a low-code editor. Those workflows can power customer-facing chatbots and perform backoffice tasks such as syncing data between applications.
Autonom8-powered applications can personalize their output for different users. According to the company, administrators may create guardrails to filter output that doesn’t align with project requirements. Autonom8 says that its platform is used in the financial services, healthcare and education sectors.
Uniphore will use the technology that it’s gaining through the acquisitions to enhance its flagship AI platform. It will also hire the Orby and Autonom8 engineering teams, which include former Google DeepMind researchers.
“With the addition of Orby and Autonom8, Uniphore will welcome world-class research and engineering talent and breakthrough AI capabilities that elevate our ability to orchestrate complex workflows,” said Uniphore co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Umesh Sachdev,
