Workato’s developer sandbox lets any company experience the power of agentic AI automation

Low-code business automation software firm Workato Inc. wants to energize the agentic artificial intelligence economy, and to do so it’s giving developers free access to its entire suite of tools for building AI-powered agents.

Announced at the company’s WOW: World of Workato event in Las Vegas today, the Workato Developer Sandbox is a self-service offering that provides full access to its flagship Workato ONE platform. With it, developers can now design, build and launch powerful AI agents that automate all kinds of business work entirely free of charge, albeit with limits on usage.

Workato is the creator of a cloud-based platform that helps businesses to automate workflows and integrate various applications, without the need for extensive coding skills. It’s built around a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface and dozens of prebuilt connectors, making it accessible to non-technical workers.

The Workato ONE platform represents the company’s bet on the future of AI, and envisions a world where many business workloads once performed by humans will be automated by intelligent agents. The company describes it as an “Agentic Stack,” and says it can act as the foundation of all agentic AI operations.

There are two main components to Workato ONE, including Workato Agentic, which provides tools for designing AI agents, and Workato Orchestrate which is used to manage them once they’ve been deployed.

With Workato Agentic, anyone can build customized AI agents that merge enterprise skills with business context and the governance needed to perform various kinds of work. It includes an Agent Studio with a low-code and no-code user interface for configuring AI agents with more than 635 different skills. It also provides tools for linking those agents to different knowledge bases, so they can securely retrieve and act upon essential business information.

As for Workato Orchestrate, this is more akin to the “nerve center” of agentic operations, providing tools for users to coordinate the work of AI agents and enable them to collaborate with humans via chat-based services such as Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Workato ONE notably supports the Model Context Protocol, which is an open standard for agentic communications first developed by Anthropic PBC. Using MCP, companies can enable secure, cross-agent collaboration, where agents work together to complete more complex tasks that require a broad skillset.

All of these capabilities are now being made available for free to developers via the Workato Developer Sandbox, so that anyone can start experimenting with the platform and see its power for themselves. Developers will have access to the platform’s full capabilities, including tools for agentic integration, automation and data movement.

They’ll also get access to AI-native capabilities such as Workato AIRO copilots and intelligent document processing, with full MCP support, together with 50,000 free usage credits, ensuring they’ll be able to do enough work to showcase the productivity benefits its agents provide.

The Developer Sandbox also provides access to various developer toolsets, including a Connector software development kit, and application programming interfaces for Test Automation, RecipeOps and more. Enterprise-grade governance is also included, with capabilities including Security Assertion Markup Language 2.0 for exchanging authentication and authorization identities between security domains, advanced encryption and audit logs.

“Everything we’ve built over the past decade is now available to developers for free,” said Chief Technology Officer Adam Seligman. “The full platform, all the connectors, Agent Studio and our remote MCP server. It’s all here, and you can build something incredible today and get it into the hands of your users tomorrow.”

The Developer Sandbox showcase is one of the main highlights of this year’s WOW: World of Workato event, which will take place over three days and demonstrate how dozens of customers are already running AI agents at scale to automate real business processes and transform the way they get work done. All told, the company is planning 15 production-grade demos, along with multiple breakout sessions and hands-on labs, in collaboration with partners such as Amazon Web Services Inc., Workday Inc., Deloitte Touche Ltd. and Accenture Plc.
