At a recent workshop on AI workforce, governance, and ethics in Laos, Bounpasith Phisamay, who is responsible for drafting the national AI strategy, shared insights on the progress being made.
The workshop, part of the effort to implement the UNESCO AI Ethics Readiness Assessment Methodology in Laos, underscored the importance of establishing a clear regulatory framework for AI usage.
Bounpasith explained several important definitions related to AI, specifically defining it as a digital technology that promises to transform Laos across various fields. The move aims to streamline governance and ensure that AI adoption aligns with national goals.
In a bid to modernise public administration, the Ministry of Technology and Communications has launched 37 digital government systems.
These systems are already improving the efficiency of essential services, such as tax collection and identity verification. The government is also developing a national digital identity system.

AI is also making notable inroads into Laos’ retail and manufacturing sectors, driving improvements in efficiency and productivity.
In retail, AI-powered technologies are enabling personalised customer experiences through tailored recommendations, as well as improving inventory management by analysing customer behaviour.
In the manufacturing sector, AI applications are being used for predictive maintenance, quality control, and optimising supply chains.
