Today, marketers aren’t just influencing people anymore. We’re increasingly influencing the machines helping people make decisions. Generative AI has transformed how consumers discover new brands, products and services. That means we are no longer creating content solely for search engines or people. We’re increasingly creating content that can be understood, surfaced and recommended by AI systems.
We can now create more content than ever before and at an unprecedented speed and scale, but volume has never been the same as value. More content doesn’t automatically create stronger customer relationships, and AI-generated slop doesn’t create meaningful connections.
As information becomes infinite, trust becomes scarce. The question I think we need to be asking is no longer “How do we create more content?” It’s “How do we create trust in an environment flooded with content?”
Authenticity Leads To Value
AI has made content easier to create, but it hasn’t changed what people value. Consumers still gravitate toward brands that understand them, solve real problems and create meaningful experiences. Being increasingly surrounded by AI-generated content, recommendations and experiences makes us crave that special human connection element that machines can’t properly replicate. What stands out now isn’t volume. It’s original thinking, real expertise, distinctive experiences and the human perspective behind them.
What I think every marketer needs to understand is that preserving these values inside increasingly automated systems will lead to the most loyal consumers. Creative standards matter more than ever because brands that rely too heavily on the same prompts, templates and trend cycles risk becoming indistinguishable from one another. The brands that stand out aren’t publishing the most content; they’re creating the strongest signals of authenticity and trust. In an era of abundance, differentiation comes from credibility, not volume.
Humans Aren’t The Only Audience Anymore
Most conversations about trust focus on people, but another audience is emerging quickly: AI agents. As agentic commerce evolves, AI systems increasingly search, compare, evaluate, recommend, negotiate and potentially purchase on behalf of consumers.
For decades, brands focused on influencing people. Now they must increasingly be understood and trusted by the machines acting in consumers’ interests. Authenticity is no longer just a human perception. It is becoming a machine-readable signal.
Trust Needs Proof
As AI becomes a larger part of discovery and commerce, brands can’t rely solely on storytelling. Their claims, products and experiences need to be backed by information that is consistent, accessible and verifiable.
Brands should prioritize accurate product and service data, consistent messaging across channels, and verifiable reviews and reputation signals. They should also put an emphasis on third-party validation, transparent governance practices and responsible AI practices. The brands that win in this AI-forward environment will make trust observable, measurable and verifiable for both agents and consumers.
Storytelling Still Matters
The future belongs to brands that can balance emotional connection with operational credibility. Keep in mind that consumers still make decisions emotionally, while AI systems do not. The brands that consumers trust will combine emotional resonance with factual credibility, strong narratives with structured evidence, and creativity with consistency.
Make sure you have a good mix between what humans trust—storytelling, emotion, creativity, brand affinity and experience—and what AI agents trust—verifiable information, evidence, consistency, reputation signals and structured data. However, the human perspective still needs to be at the forefront because only humans can properly decide what is culturally meaningful, emotionally resonant and actually worth paying attention to.
The strongest brands will earn trust from both humans and the systems helping humans make decisions. Consumers won’t reward brands simply for producing more content. They’ll reward brands that consistently deliver value, earn trust and create experiences worth returning to.
In the next era of commerce, trust isn’t simply part of the brand experience. Trust is the interface.
