Workers with AI skills can find unprecedented salary growth opportunities in 2025. The demand for AI skills is at an all-time high, and those who are experts in the area are best positioned to thrive in the modern workspace.
Reporting on the impact of AI on the workforce has largely been negative thanks to the large-scale layoffs that have dominated the conversation, however, those who have adapted to the changing times have greatly benefited from the arrival of artificial intelligence. Job listings that ask for AI skills offer much higher salaries to eligible workers, raising pay by almost $18,000 per year.
The AI fever is catching everyone off guard, but it has been particularly hard on employees who are already competing with fresh talent in an industry of their choice and now have to hold their own against AI experts who can find a way to do their jobs better without them. Despite the challenge it presents, it appears that the era of AI doesn’t have to work against you. Employees are not being replaced entirely by AI just yet, and there is considerable room for those with AI skills on their resume to build their careers at a much faster rate than their competitors. In 2025, it is essential to adapt to the times and incorporate some AI learning as soon as possible.

AI Skills Linked to a 28% Growth in Salary—It’s Time to Catch up to the Times
In Lightcast’s recent study titled Beyond the Buzz: Developing the AI Skills Employers Actually Need, an analysis of 1.3 billion job postings revealed that listings with AI skills offered 28% higher salaries, which added up to almost $18,000 more per year. The relevance of AI skills in job listings is often written off as a vague awareness of prompting ChatGPT—something that most of us can pull off—or an intricate understanding of how to develop AI, but this is not the case. A basic understanding of the technology is no longer satisfactory, but more employers are looking for employees who understand how to optimize AI for their own industry.
Employers who are pushing the demand for AI skills now understand the need to prioritize a company-wide understanding of AI rather than just a small team of AI experts. As a result, most are in search of employees who are fully qualified for their particular roles, who also understand how to optimize AI to do their jobs better. The AI job market is growing with employees who have leveled up their understanding of AI beyond simple prompt engineering and expanded beyond niche technical experts to include those in non-tech roles as well.
The AI Skills Demand Is Apparent in Non-tech Industries
It’s no surprise that the AI job market is booming, but what is surprising is the scale at which most industries are prioritizing AI expertise in their recruitment process. According to the Lightcast report, as of 2024, 51% of job postings that expect AI skills are outside of IT and computer science roles, with 800% growth in generative AI roles across non-tech industries since 2022. These numbers are a healthy reminder that it is no longer enough to be an expert in your industry if you are unable to back the expertise up with AI knowledge.
The report also broke down the five critical career areas that are growing in parallel with AI. In marketing and PR, 8% of job postings require AI skills, with the demand most evident in SEO specialist roles. In HR, there is a 66% growth rate leading all sectors of the industry. Finance undoubtedly has a rising demand for AI, and so does Education and Training, albeit at a lower scale.
The Popularity of AI Skills Paired with Salary Hikes Is Advantageous for Workers
Many of us have been led to believe that the only way to make money in 2025 is to become an expert on AI and work in tech. While the former is true, the study shows that the latter isn’t. Those who have spent years building a career in their industry of choice don’t have to throw it all away to work for a software firm or an AI development agency. It is possible to continue in your current careers and also enjoy some of the few perks of the rise of AI by making calculated investments in developing AI skills.
While this will require an initial investment of time and resources alongside your typical 9-to-5, it could open up doors to new opportunities that pay much better. With AI job skills promising a 28% salary boost, there are more reasons to adapt to the rising emphasis on AI than to resist it. Many organizations are still working out how exactly they can use AI in their business, but if you are able to walk into your interview with a ready response on how you can aid company growth with the assistance of AI, you should find it easy to get hired quickly with a welcome hike in pay to boot.
